The Theory Of Science Of The Twentieth Century - 1105 Words

Thomas S. Kuhn, one of the most influential philosophers of science of the twentieth century, once stated that â€Å"A person may be attracted to science for all sorts of reasons. Among them are the desire to be useful, the excitement of exploring new territory, the hope of finding order, and the drive to test established knowledge† (Krein, n.d., para. 1). Scientists for centuries have spent countless hours attracted to science in an attempt to understand the natural world. As a result, the evolution of science witnessed the emergence of a process by which the science community learned to develop questions, conduct investigations, collect evidence from a variety of sources, and propose explanations that are based on evidence from conducted†¦show more content†¦Each step of the scientific method serves a purpose as to how scientists discover and share information. The first step of the scientific method is to make an observation. Everyday people make observations about the world and by doing so, are participating in the first step of the scientific method. By making an observation as a part of science that person can question how it came to be or how it works (Bradford, 2015). This is the second step of the scientific method; ask questions about the observations. Forming a hypothesis, the next step, allows for scientists to make a brief description of the observations and to make a prediction or an educated guess based on the description (Bradford, 2015). The fourth step in the scientific method is to test the prediction and hypothesis. During this step, scientists form experiments to test their predictions against what happens in reality (Bradford, 2015). Analyzing the data and making a conclusion to accept or reject the hypothesis is the fifth step to the scientific method. During this step scientists compare the data to the hypothesis to determine if the hypothesis is valid or incorrect. Additionally, scientists check to see how c losely the model they created replicates what happens in the real world (Bradford, 2015). The sixth and final step to the scientific method requires that scientists replicate the experiment and

Do Cell Phones Really Connect Us More with Society

History is full of examples of new products or technologies that initially come out in stores with such potential, but have some negative consequences. Cell phones to many people are one of the greatest invention to mankind, but to others they are nothing more than a nuisance. Some people believe that phones now-a-days give people the opportunity to connect with others more, yet some say that these phones are making us more disconnect than ever from society. The smart phones of today are capable of doing so much, such as: calling people without touching the phone, sending a text message without touching the phone, surfing the internet, etc. For the most part, it is the younger generations who appreciate the technology we have today, and the older folk do not understand how to use them so they do not like them nearly as much. The younger population considers them to be very useful, from the more complex tasks such as when you need to look something up very quickly, all the way down to the simple task of writing down the grocery list. Although many say that cell phones help us keep in touch with people and stay connected, in reality they are isolating us more than ever now. Mid Term 1 Solution Free Essays

COT5405 Analysis of Algorithms Midterm 1 Solution Summer 2012 June 11 In all cases explain clearly and as succinctly as possible. Problem 1 10 Pts Answer: n T (n) = 2T ( n ) + log n 2 2 n = 4T ( n ) + logn n + log n 4 2 2 2 n = 4T ( n ) + log nn? 1 + log n 4 2 2 = †¦ ?log2 n 1 = nT (1) + n i=1 i ? n Since i=1 1 ln n, T (n) ? ?(n log log n) i Problem 2 20 Pts Answer: The general idea is to use the technique similar to quick sort, by doing partition on both lids and cups. First we pick a cup randomly, and use it to partition the lids into two subsets: those lids smaller than the size of that cup, and those larger than the size of the cup. We will write a custom essay sample on Mid Term 1 Solution or any similar topic only for you Order Now We can also ? nd the correspondent lid for that chosen cup. Second we use that lid to partition the cups and divide them into two sets. We keep on repeating this procedure on each subset of cups/lids until all the cups/lids are paired. The overall time complexity is O(n log n) (Worst case: O(n2 )). Problem 3 20 Pts Answer: In this problem we are more interested in ? ding the median instead of the minimum/maximum element. The ? n ? th element in a min/max heap is not the median. 2 In this case, we should develop a new type of heap to adapt this problem. Problem 3 2 The solution is to use two heaps: a min heap and a max heap. Suppose the total number of elements is n, we set the restriction that the max heap should contain ? n ? 2 elements. Correspondingly, the min heap contains n ? ? n ? elements. 2 When we insert an element, we always insert it into the max heap. If the number of elements in the max heap exceeds ? n ? , we remove the maximum element in the 2 max heap (the root), and insert it into the minimum heap. During this procedure, we need to do heapify to maintain the heap structure for both heaps. Under this setting, it is easy to see that all the elements in the max heap are less than those in the min heap, and the two elements at the root of both heaps represent the ? n ? th 2 and (? n ? + 1)th element. 2 Suppose the median is de? ned to be the ? n ? th element over all n elements. When 2 we delete the median, we just delete the root of the max heap, and the following two cases might occur: (1) If the max heap contains ? n? 1 ? elements, then we do delete-max to the max 2 heap. (2) If the max heap contains ? n? 1 ? ? 1 elements, we take out the root of the min 2 heap and set it to be the root in the max heap (because it is larger than all the elements in the max heap), then we do delete-min to the min heap. It is straightforward to see that the time complexity for both insert and delete-median is O(log n). COT5405 Analysis of Algorithms HW 2 How to cite Mid Term 1 Solution, Essay examples

Movie Summary Pay it Forward Essay Example For Students

Movie Summary Pay it Forward Essay The Pay it Forward really inspired the kindness for me. It gave me some emotions, love, desperation, hope, anger, fear and happiness. It showed me altruism and generosity and I can see goodness inside people. When I saw Trevor invites a homeless man called Jerry to eat, shower, and sleep at his house, and Jerry talk to Arlene about how that action change Jerry’s mind make me know how the Pay it forward work. I know that some act seems small with us but it can change other person life, we dont need a lot of money or power to change the world. All we need to do is change the lives of a few people and inspire them to do the same. But I don’t think idea P. I. F could really become a global movement, It needs a lot of trust from people who are helped. I think almost people usually think about what they could receive back. In real life, in a scientific study, people usually feel thankful and want to return the favor (PIF is one) most in short time after they are received from other. It is descending by time so it difficult to become a global movement. One thing in real life, people often suspect when they receive a big favor without reward (like reporter in movie). I think almost people usually think about what they could receive back. It really happened in me. I often helped other people even I don’t know or we aren’t close because I think I could get returning a favor, paid back or good relationship or I was in a same conjuncture and I was receive help from other people (maybe wasn’t and at that time I had hoped a person who I know or not help me). After this movie, I got a project about pay it forward. Although it seems a work which I must do, I still tried to think about a big kind act or a help form stranger (me). I had had some ideas to do it like help my teacher clean his room or help a sweeper clean but they failed. It was my first try to do a pay it forward act, like Trevor I was so disappointed. But Trevor was success after that so I also tried to find some other ideas. I add friend with a lot of student in school even I don’t know who they are to. When one of them in their birth day, it appear in my notification. I had an idea is send him a gift with the PIF. I thought I could skip it so I attached a small paper â€Å"happy birthday† and his name on it in to the gift. I put the gift in the ground in front of his door, knocked the door and got out so he didn’t know who give him this gift. I was so excited and happy when I saw he was smiling by the time he opened that gift even though that act is feasible. I saw a thing that when we make people are happy also make we are happy. It inspire to me to do the second Pay it forward act. One time, in Sunday night, I saw my house parent was taking garbage from ground and putting it into plastic bag, garbage was huge and so smelly. Student thrown garbage only in Sunday night, two big bin was full so student put their trash in the ground. Houseparent must clean it. Although we don’t like each other because I had been late to check-in a lot in the past and he often go to my room to makes me clean my room when I doing homework or playing game, but I still went to and said I let me help him. .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 , .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 .postImageUrl , .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 , .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747:hover , .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747:visited , .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747:active { border:0!important; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747:active , .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747 .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ufa26b6681f0ec8895a0e30249baaf747:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Movie Summary - American Sniper EssayWe cleaned the trash together and I sent him the paper.
